1(35) [A Psalm] of David. Judge you, O Lord, them that injure me, fight against them that fight against me.
1By David; when he pretended to be insane before Abimelech, who drove him away, and he departed. I will bless Yahweh at all times. His praise will always be in my mouth.
2Take hold of shield and buckler, and arise for my help.
2My soul shall boast in Yahweh. The humble shall hear of it and be glad.
3Bring forth a sword, and stop [the way] against them that persecute me: say to my soul, I am your salvation.
3Oh magnify Yahweh with me. Let’s exalt his name together.
4Let them that seek my soul be ashamed and confounded: let them that devise evils against me be turned back and put to shame.
4I sought Yahweh, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears.
5Let them be as dust before the wind, and an angel of the Lord afflicting them.
5They looked to him, and were radiant. Their faces shall never be covered with shame.
6Let their way be dark and slippery, and an angel of the Lord persecuting them.
6This poor man cried, and Yahweh heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.
7For without cause they have hid for me their destructive snare: without a cause they have reproached my soul.
7Yahweh’s angel encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them.
8Let a snare which they know not come upon them; and the gin which they hid take them; and let them fall into the very same snare.
8Oh taste and see that Yahweh is good. Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.
9But my soul shall exult in the Lord: it shall delight in his salvation.
9Oh fear Yahweh, you his saints, for there is no lack with those who fear him.
10All my bones shall say, O Lord, who is like to you? delivering the poor out of the hand of them that are stronger than he, yes, the poor and needy one from them that spoil him.
10The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger, but those who seek Yahweh shall not lack any good thing.
11Unjust witnesses arose, and asked me of things I new not.
11Come, you children, listen to me. I will teach you the fear of Yahweh.
12They rewarded me evil for good, and bereavement to my soul.
12Who is someone who desires life, and loves many days, that he may see good?
13But I, when they troubled me, put on sackcloth, and humbled my soul with fasting: and my prayer shall return to my [own] bosom.
13Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking lies.
14I behaved agreeably towards them as [if it had been] our neighbor [or] brother: I humbled myself as one mourning and sad of countenance.
14Depart from evil, and do good. Seek peace, and pursue it.
15Yet they rejoiced against me, and plagues were plentifully brought against me, and I knew [it] not: they were scattered, but repented not.
15Yahweh’s eyes are toward the righteous. His ears listen to their cry.
16They tempted me, they sneered at me most contemptuously, they gnashed their teeth upon me.
16Yahweh’s face is against those who do evil, to cut off their memory from the earth.
17O Lord, when will you look upon me? Deliver my soul from their mischief, my only-begotten one from the lions.
17The righteous cry, and Yahweh hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles.
18I will give thanks to you even in a great congregation: in an abundant people I will praise you.
18Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.
19Let not them that are my enemies without a cause rejoice against me; who hate me for nothing, and wink with their eyes.
19Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but Yahweh delivers him out of them all.
20For to me they spoke peaceably, but imagined deceits in [their] anger.
20He protects all of his bones. Not one of them is broken.
21And they opened wide their mouth upon me; they said Aha, aha, our eyes have seen [it].
21Evil shall kill the wicked. Those who hate the righteous shall be condemned.
22You have seen [it], O Lord: keep not silence: O Lord, withdraw not [yourself] from me.
22Yahweh redeems the soul of his servants. None of those who take refuge in him shall be condemned.
