1(45) For the end, for alternate [strains] by the sons of Core; for instruction, a Song concerning the beloved. My heart has uttered a good matter: I declare my works to the king: my tongue is the pen of a quick writer.
1For the Chief Musician. By the sons of Korah. A contemplative psalm. We have heard with our ears, God; our fathers have told us what work you did in their days, in the days of old.
2You are more beautiful than the sons of men: grace has been shed forth on your lips: therefore God has blessed you for ever.
2You drove out the nations with your hand, but you planted them. You afflicted the peoples, but you spread them abroad.
3Gird your sword upon your thigh, O Mighty One, in your comeliness, and in your beauty;
3For they didn’t get the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them; but your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, because you were favorable to them.
4and bend [your bow], and prosper, and reign, because of truth and meekness and righteousness; and your right hand shall guide you wonderfully.
4God, you are my King. Command victories for Jacob!
5Your weapons are sharpened, Mighty One, (the nations shall fall under you) [they are] in the heart of the king's enemies.
5Through you, we will push down our adversaries. Through your name, we will tread down those who rise up against us.
6Your throne, O God, is for ever and ever: the sceptre of your kingdom is a sceptre of righteousness.
6For I will not trust in my bow, neither will my sword save me.
7You have loved righteousness, and hated iniquity: therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your fellows.
7But you have saved us from our adversaries, and have shamed those who hate us.
8Myrrh, and stacte, and cassia [are exhaled] from your garments, [and] out of the ivory palaces,
8In God we have made our boast all day long. We will give thanks to your name forever. Selah.
9with which kings' daughters have gladdened you for your honor: the queen stood by on your right hand, clothed in vesture wrought with gold, [and] arrayed in various colors.
9But now you rejected us, and brought us to dishonor, and don’t go out with our armies.
10Hear, O daughter, and see, and incline your ear; forget also your people, and your father's house.
10You make us turn back from the adversary. Those who hate us take plunder for themselves.
11Because the king has desired your beauty; for he is your Lord.
11You have made us like sheep for food, and have scattered us among the nations.
12And the daughter of Tyre shall adore him with gifts; the rich of the people of the land shall supplicate your favor.
12You sell your people for nothing, and have gained nothing from their sale.
13All her glory [is that] of the daughter of the king of Esebon, robed [as she is] in golden fringed garments,
13You make us a reproach to our neighbors, a scoffing and a derision to those who are around us.
14in embroidered [clothing]: virgins shall be brought to the king after her: her fellows shall be brought to you.
14You make us a byword among the nations, a shaking of the head among the peoples.
15They shall be brought with gladness and exultation: they shall be led into the king's temple.
15All day long my dishonor is before me, and shame covers my face,
16Instead of your fathers children are born to you: you shall make them princes over all the earth.
16at the taunt of one who reproaches and verbally abuses, because of the enemy and the avenger.
17They shall make mention of your name from generation to generation: therefore shall the nations give thanks to you for ever, even for ever and ever.
17All this has come on us, yet we haven’t forgotten you. We haven’t been false to your covenant.
